Esq.

Esq.
Esq.
This abbreviation is a 16c shortening, as a written form of address, of esquire, which originally denoted ‘a young aspirant to knighthood who attended and served a knight’, and was later extended to refer to other classes of men including peers, lawyers, and so on. By the mid-20c Esq. had become a courtesy designation, principally in correspondence, with no significance as to rank. When Esq. is used, it follows the name and replaces any prefixed title (Mr, Dr, Capt., etc.) that would otherwise be used. With one exception (US lawyers addressing themselves), its use is restricted to Britain, and even here it is dying out as other conventions come into use.

Modern English usage. 2014.
